Power carries a heavy weight, often eliciting a negative response. When we think of things like power & leadership power, we think strong — like brute force strong. Or of global leaders, placed on pedestals, impossibly out of reach.
Right?
And, if you are a woman, you might assume power is a word you shouldn't associate with yourself. Why? Pick the reason that fits best for you:
- One definition of power is the ability to get extra-base hits (male-dominated sports reference);
- There are only 15 female world leaders;
- When you look up the words power or leader on Google, the images are masculine; or
- It’s not how you were raised.
But what if we’ve got it all wrong?
What if we realized it also means moral efficacy, authority, and influencing others?

SIGN UPDefine Leadership Power on Your Own Terms
Power is a beautiful and attractive thing when we reframe it using these terms.
As business owners, we want to show a strong moral compass, stand in our authority as subject-matter experts, and, like it or not, influence others to hire us and listen to our expertise.
Take hold of every great thing in your life. Everything is intended for you.
If you want to reach your business goals, get comfortable with power.
How do you do that?
Listen to yourself. Trust your intuition. Do the things that you know are good for you.
Hang out with friends and family. Take a jog. Meditate. Whatever it is, make time for self-care. Do the things you love and spend time with the people you love.
Walk the talk. Don’t just say you are going to do things that will be good for you and your business — get out and do them.
Are you overstretched? Hire someone. Don’t have the money to hire someone? Find an intern.
Go down your list and start doing the things you keep putting off.
Stop deciding that power is just for men even though everything and everyone tells you so. Power does not discriminate, and it is inside all of us.
Stand up for yourself. Know that you have something great to offer. Because you do. Stop selling yourself short.
That’s something you can be proud of.
